All over bar the shouting, lots of it
By Xolani Xundu
THE ANC delegates in Polokwane have made it clear that they want change in the party and change it looks like they are going to get.
Unless something drastic happens, it looks like ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma is going to walk the ANC presidential race, leaving current incumbent, Thabo Mbeki, far behind.
Mbeki tried to appeal to reason of the more than 4000 delegates when, in his political report, he spelt out the challenges faced by the ANC are as it approaches it centenary celebrations in 2012.
The majority of the rank-and-file were was not interested. It look like they blame the Prez for all the wrong things that have bedevilled the ruling party.
Not even warnings that the ruling party could face a reduced electoral support in the 2009 general elections should Zuma ascend to the top job, could persuade the delegates otherwise.
Trying very hard to ask the difficult questions, like: “If we are divided, what divides us?” “Nguwe” (Its you) came an answer from some delegates.
Now, as a friend of mine likes pointing out, when analysing the Mbeki-Zuma tussle, “unless I cheated in my social science course, Zuma is way ahead and will win the race.”
